ABSTRACT
In a bid to improve health care in the Have Municipal Assembly, management are thinking of using a Health Information System that will help them manage the health care process in the council. They require a system that will enable them to keep records of each patient registered in the Assembly. The records will consist of each patient’s demographic details and a history of the ailments that he/she has reported in the last five years.
The Have Municipal Assembly also wants to keep records of all the medical workers they deal with. This includes the GPs (General Practioner), the nurses, the consultants and those under their supervision and the technicians like the radiographers, lab workers etc., who are based in the hospitals within the council (most of them work in more than one hospital).
This is an effort to cut cost and enable an efficient health care system. For example instead of a GP giving a written form to a patient to go for an X-ray or a Lab test, which is done in the hospitals, the medical information system will enable the GP to send the request straight from his office. On the other hand the turnaround time for the GP to get the results is reduced as the results are sent back on-line. Also referrals to specialist consultants based in the council hospitals will be dealt with in the same way.
A good feature of this system is the system’s ability to cut down resource abuse with regards to drugs. The system will enable both the GP and the hospital doctors to prescribe medication to any pharmacy shop in the council. The GP or hospital doctor prescribes and the patient goes to any pharmacy shop in the council. The dispenser then goes to their computer and sees the prescription with all the detailed information including who ordered the prescription when and for the treatment of which ailment. In this way the council hopes to monitor the prescription and administration of drugs.
Based on very good recommendations your group has been contracted to develop a database system that will enable Have Municipal Assembly to achieve their aims and be able to perform the following functions:
Using MySQL, design and implement a realistic database system and develop a range of SQL queries for the Have Municipal Assembly case study.
