Abstracts: With the ever increasing prices of fossil fuels, demand for cleaner energy sources, and government funding incentives, wind turbines are becoming more viable technology for electrical power generation. Fortunately there is an abundance of wind energy to be harnessed. Currently, horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) dominate commercially, over vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). However, VAWT do have some advantages over HAWT. We have designed and manufactured a hybrid vertical axis wind turbine . Our wind turbine consists of both savoneous and derrieus blades , these blades are mounted on the same shaft . The blades are mounted in such a way that we can achieve all the advantages of both the types of blades . Using this hybrid design we were able to provide a self starting characteristic to the turbine . The efficiency of turbine is high for a wide range of speed . We have designed our wind mill to work in proper condition till the wind speed is below 12 m/s and the best performance is obtained at 7 m/s speed of wind . During the tests which we conducted to find the average wind speed ,we got 6-7 m/s average speed at a height of 10 m . The power generated at this height and at a speed of 7 m/s is around 300 watts .
