The purpose of buccal tablet is the same that of sublingual tablet.Buccal administration involve placement of the drug between the gums and the cheek. This medication can come in the form of tablet, films ,or sprays.Buccal intended to be held in the mouth ,where they release their drug contents for absorption directly through oral mucosa.
These tablets are usually flat or oval shape.They have good absorption properties through the oral mucosa.Absorption of drugs through the highly vascular mucosal lining of the mouth moves the drug through the buccal capillaries and enters into general circulation from the oral venous drainage system to the right heart, by passing stomach and liver, i.e., first pass metabolism.Ideally the drug for buccal , use shoud be in a small dose usually not more than 10-15 mg and should not have an undesirable taste.
Patient conselling :
sublingual and buccal tablets should not be placed under the tongue .place the buccal tablet between the lip and gum or between the cheek and gum. Allow the tablet to dissolve. Do not eat,drink , smoke or use chewing tabacco,while the tablet is dissolving avoid toching the tablet with tongue it may cause the tablet to dissolve faster.
