Introduction
In mechanical engineering there are different methods of transmitting power/motion from driving machinery to the driven machinery.
Well-known methods are ropes, belts, chains and directly coupled shafts.
Two types of transmission:
Power
Motion
Cams are used for the motion transmission rather than power transmission.
Components of CAM
System has 3 main components:
Cam, follower and guide
Follower follows the input motion of the first element called cam.
Radial cam
It is a flat disc with irregular shape and thickness to accommodate the follower.
When radial cam rotates about axis of rotation, the radial distance to the surface varies, where the follower is resting.
A circular disc with eccentric mounting can be used as a cam. Because the radial distance to the outer surface will be variable at different angular positions.
When the radial cam rotates follower will have reciprocating motion or oscillatory motion.
Face cam
There is a circular disc mounted vertically. This disc has a wide groove accommodating roller type follower. The cam body is mounted vertically to rotate about horizontal axis. When it rotates the roller type follower trapped in the groove in the vertical plate reciprocates along the vertical line due to the changing radial distance.
The other option is grooved cam in which disc is mounted horizontally and follower is knife edge type.
