INTRODUCTION
Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) is a new approach to a more efficient use of existing power system resources based on the utilization of high-current high-voltage power electronic controllers. FACT device is used to enhance its power transfer capability by compensating the reactive power in the transmission lines.
Now a days series compensation is used for long transmission lines to compensate the reactive power by altering or changing the characteristic impedance of the line. All types of static power compensators offering increasing transferred power in long lines, improving stability, damping of low frequency oscillations and control of dynamic over voltages.
Thyristor controlled series capacitor is a series FACTS device. TCSC is a capacitive reactance compensator which consists of a series capacitor bank shunted by a thyristor controlled reactor (TCR). In contrast to the conventional fixed series capacitor switched by breakers, TCSC is more effective and provides distinct solutions due to flexible control of thyristor. TCSC is connected in series with the transmission line conductors in order to offset the inductive reactance of the line.

TCSC controllers use thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) in parallel with capacitor segments of series capacitor bank . The combination of TCR and capacitor allow the capacitive reactance to be smoothly controlled over a wide range and switched upon command to a condition where the bi-directional thyristor pairs conduct continuously and insert an inductive reactance into the line
