There are numerous applications of image processing, such as satellite imaging, medical imaging and video where image size or image stream size is too large and requires a large amount of storage space and higher bandwidth for communication in its original form. Due to rapid growth of digital media and the subsequent need for reduced storage and to transmit the image in an effective manner image compression is needed. Therefore, the theory of image compression becomes more and more significant. Image compression attempts to reduce the number of bits required to digitally represent an image while maintaining its perceived visual quality. This study concentrates on the lossless compression of image and lossy compression of image. The performance of various methods is compared.
