INTRODUCTION
Change management is a broad term. In this assignment, I will begin by explaining the theoretical concept of “Change Management’. I did my internship with Sify Technologies Ltd, an IT company. Therefore in the later part of the assignment I will discuss Sify’s change management process and its implementation with the help of a case study.
CONCEPT OF CHANGE MANAGEMENT
Change management is a structured approach to shifting/transitioning individuals, teams, and organizations from a current state to a desired future state. It is an organizational process aimed at helping employees to accept and embrace changes in their current business environment. In project management, change management refers to a project management process where changes to a project are formally introduced and approved.
Kotter defines change management as the utilization of basic structures and tools to control any organizational change effort. Change management's goal is to minimize the change impacts on workers and avoid distractions.
PROCESS OF CHANGE MANAGEMENT
The change management process is the sequence of steps or activities that a change management team or project leader would follow to apply change management to a project or change. Based on a research of the most effective and commonly applied change, most change management processes contain the following three phases:
Phase 1 - Preparing for change (Preparation, assessment and strategy development)
Phase 2 - Managing change (Detailed planning and change management implementation)
Phase 3 - Reinforcing change (Data gathering, corrective action and recognition)
CHANGE MANAGEMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF IT
A Change is any action which, when taken, alters the system configuration or environment of an established baseline, whether the action is an upgrade, modification or addition to hardware, software, firmware, application, documentation, network or IT infrastructure. The impact of improperly managed change can be significant and tends to be very visible.
The purpose of the Change Management process is to ensure that all governed changes are effectively managed, thus reducing or eliminating disruptions to business services (Incidents) resulting from change. In addition, the Change Management process functions as an enabler for effectively and efficiently delivering IT changes to meet the needs of the business.
