INTRODUCTION
The designLab at IBM's Almaden Research Center is working to make today's computers disappear into a world of ubiquitous computing, in which everyday objects such as fashion jewelry will have embedded intelligence. The images in this photo depict a necklace with an imbedded microphone, earrings that have tiny speakers attached and a ring that works like a scrolling device. It's all part of the future of pervasive computing - access to information anytime, anywhere.
Hearing earrings -- The jewelry in this photo is more that appealing to the eye -- the necklace contains a microphone, the earrings are speakers and the ring is a scrolling device like a mouse, all of which be used to access data and information from a portable computing device. They are prototypes developed by IBM Research, with the goal of incorporating digital function into objects people already wear so they don't have to carry around extra devices and accessories
Data on the wrist -- This watch and bracelet are more than fashionable accessories - they are also small computing devices developed by IBM Research that allow the wearer to access information stored locally on its tiny drives or connect to network services and surf the Web. By combining pleasing form with digital function, the researchers hope to one day free users from carrying around clunky digital devices and accessories like palm computers, Web phones, headsets and microphones, by incorporating them into items they already wear
