What is SAP?
1 The company name, SAP, stands for Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing.
2 SAP AG has become the world's leading vendor of standard application software.
3 SAP is a name of a company which offers ERP solution for various industries to integrate information from various functions of that industry under one system.
4 ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is enterprise wide information system which consolidate information from various functions/departments of an organization.
What is SAP R/3?
1 SAP R/3 = System Applications and Products in Data Processing (R = real time, 3 = 3 tier).
2 The SAP R/3 system is targeted to most industries: manufacturing, retail, oil and gas, electricity, health care, pharmaceutical, banking, insurance, telecommunications, transport, automotive, chemical, and so on.
3 The customer list includes most of the U.S. Fortune 100 companies, 97 percent of the most profitable German companies, and other impressive figures from companies around the world.
What is SAP R/3 Architecture?
1 SAP R/3 uses one data system for all business functions, that means it is integrated. All users see the effects of current transactions immediately which means it is real time.
2 Users can connect to the system anywhere in the world with an internet connection because it uses a TCP/IP compliant method.
3 The sole purpose of an R/3 system is to provide a suite of tightly integrated, large scale business applications.
Presentation Layer
1 This is the software component for graphic user interface. It is called SAP GUI and is the interface between an SAP system and the user.
2 It gets the user input, sends it to application server for processing, receives data, formats and output it.
3 The presentation layer resides on a user’s PC or laptop and uses its resources like RAM, processor, monitor, etc. An SAP GUI session on the presentation server (desktop or laptop) is linked to a terminal session on the application server.
Advantage of 3 tiers
1 The central database is heavily loaded as all the data is here. All users and all types of data processing use it. So it is best to keep it separate from application server.
2 The separation of application layer from presentation layer also distributes load on the system.
3 Presentation server hosts the GUI software which deals with data formatting, screen output, integration with other desktop applications like Microsoft Excel, Word, etc and does not involve application server in these tasks which is involved with program execution.
4 SAP GUI and presentation layer software components are designed to keep the data flow between them to the minimum.
CONCLUSION
1 Looking from whole point of view SAP R/3 is one of the suitable software for managing large number of business processes. SAP AG provides online service systems for administration and guidance.
2 It provides consulting, information and maintenance services for the customers of SAP/3 software. Thus SAP R/3 would be the most suitable software package to almost every industrial application for medium as well as large scale industries.
