INTRODUCTION
Internship is a very important part in the accomplishment of study of any course as this helps the students to gain training in readiness for job opportunities, thus it is always very important for students, despite the level of education to undertake an Industrial attachment. This assists in acquiring and developing practical skills and expertise, which will help their career and prepare them for the challenges in real life, aside from the theoretical knowledge taught.
I commenced my attachment in the Macro-Economics Directorate, specifically in the Public Finance section as directed by the Director of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. I was put under the supervision of officers in the Public Finance Section, namely Mr.Gitau and Mrs.Malova.
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of the study was to: -
To expose me to the practical industrial environment experience for enhancement of theoretical knowledge acquired from college.
To familiarize oneself with the current industrial trends and what to expect in the field.
To develop data gathering and analysis skills and data recording.
To get knowledge on the new technology that is being used in the working environment.
To develop social skills and speed in carrying out tasks and develop good inter-personal skill.
To provide me with a suitable background of experience for more advanced study by making me aware of my abilities, areas of special interests and future specialization.
1.3.2 Location
The KNBS is located in Herufi House which is situated along off Haile Sellasie Avenue between the Central Bank of Kenya and the Treasury Building. It also has other offices at Nyayo house.
1.3.3 The Vision of KNBS
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics seeks to become a centre of excellence in statistical production and management for national development.
1.3.4 The Mission of KNBS
To coordinate and supervise production and dissemination of comprehensive, integrated, accurate and timely statistics required mainly to inform national development initiatives and processes; and develop and maintain a socio-economic national database of the National Statistical System
1.3.5 Functions of KNBS
The functions of KNBS fall into four categories as shown below:
Data collection
KNBS has an elaborate infrastructure for data collection such as District Statistical Officers and trained enumerators in every district. The organization also obtains data from the government ministries for analysis.
Data analysis and production of official statistics
After data has been collected, it is presented to the governments trained statistical officers for analysis. It is after the professional analysis when statistics are produced.
Dissemination of results to users and producers
This is usually carried out through the various annual publications such as;Economic Survey, Statistical Abstract, Facts and Figures.Other organizations can also obtain the statistics from the bureau for their own use.
