About Coir in General
Coir is a multicultural hard fiber obtained from the husk of the coconut (Cocos nuciferae), a plant of the tropics belongs to the palmae. Coir is an interesting natural vegetable fiber possessing certain inherent physical & chemical characteristics, making it suitable for manufacture of coir yarn, floor coverings, mats, and ropes. It is having comparatively very large lignin content in its composition (40-45%) resembling to the woody tissue & is very hard weaving, bio-degradable environment friendly enabling its use in different conventional & non commercial applications.
Introduction:
According to the Indian coconut committees “History and Home of Coconut” published in September 1954, the coconut palm originated in Sri Lanka. In another view, the coconuts drifted in the sea from Polynesia and found new homes in many parts of the world. According to early Greek Chronicles, it was Megasthenes, Ambassador of the Seluces Nicater, who told the Indian king, Chandra Gupta about the Coconut Palm, he found in Sri Lanka in 300BC. Arab writers of 11th century AD referred to the uses of coir as ships cables, fenders and rigging. Marco Polo’s celebrated travelogue of the 12th century mentioned on the uses to which coir fiber n mats were put in use in the sailing vessels of Arabs. He later saw the land where Arabs brought their coir and recorded how it was made out of the fiber from the coconut husk.
COIR INDUSTRY - CURRENT STATUS
The development of coir industry has all along been in areas where there is concentration of coconut cultivation and availability of coconut husks. Coir industry is of great importance to Kerala where it is second only to agriculture as a source of employment. With the expansion of coconut cultivation and concerted efforts of the Coir board and the respective state governments, coir industry is coming up in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and Assam also. Among the States in India, Kerala is the largest producer of coconuts.
MISSION
The Coir Boards overall mission is creating a self-reliant environment for the healthy growth of the industry with the social objective of improving the living condition of all those in this industry, especially the manufactures and workers.
VISION
On the whole Coir Board has embarked o a paradigm shift in the existing structure in coir sector to focus on technology up gradation, improvement in productivity, value addition, market penetration, strengthening of database and to secure a better sustainable economic prosperity to the workers depending on it.
OBJECTIVES
It aims at economic objectives of providing employment and ensuring reasonable returns to the workers, producers and exporters, besides promoting quality and value added products acceptable at the domestic and export mark.etc.
A sustainable development of the Indian Coir Industry through strategic intervention, modernization, research and development, technology up gradation, quality improvement, and market promotion environment protection are other focused areas.
