KNITTING
WD Assignment June 2010 - Final.pdf (Size: 83.58 KB / Downloads: 30)
Introduction
Knitting involves creating fabric and garments out of yarn or thread. It is an ancient craft dating back over a
thousand years that is practised in many parts of the world. Knitting is a fairly simple skill to learn and the basic
equipment needed to start knitting is inexpensive. After a decline in popularity, in recent years there has been a
knitting revival, especially in the western world.
Scenario
To capitalise on a renewed interest in knitting, a consortium of yarn producers has approached you to develop a
website that will encourage people to take up knitting as a hobby. The website will need to assume the users of the
site have little prior knowledge of knitting.
Task 1 – 10 Marks – Research
There are many different websites with information about knitting. You should do some research into knitting
using these websites. When conducting your research bear in mind the purpose and aim of your website, to
introduce knitting as a fun, easy to learn hobby. You should make notes and record the addresses of useful websites
that you find. Discuss these notes and ideas for your website with your tutor before proceeding.
Task 2 – 10 Marks – Project Plan
Produce a project plan for the way you intend to complete the rest of this assignment. For planning, use the
timescale you have been allocated for this assignment i.e. from the date you start to the date you submit your
assignment. Submit a copy of your plan to your tutor BEFORE you proceed further with the assignment.
Task 3 – 15 Marks – Design Specification
Using appropriate techniques, you are required to specify the structure and navigation of the proposed site. The
specification should be neat, use appropriate techniques and be easy to understand. Imagine the specification is
being used to explain your proposed website to someone with no prior knowledge of web design. There should be
enough detail presented in such a way that the customer can quickly understand what will be developed.
Task 4 – 40 Marks – Website
The website must be developed using XHTML 1.0 (Transitional or Strict) and consist of between four and six
inter-linked pages. The website will need to provide the following features:
• A homepage that clearly explains what knitting is and shows a video of knitting.
• A page that explains the basic technique of knitting: holding the needles, casting on, the basic stitches etc.
Video should not be used for this part of the website.
• A gallery page that shows different pieces of knitwear. The purpose of the gallery is to show the diverse range
of items that can be created through knitting. The information in this page should be presented as an HTML
table.
• A page that demonstrates the use of HTML forms. This will provide an interface through which users can sign
up for a monthly newsletter that will provide information on additional knitting techniques and knitting
patterns. You are not required to write any code that will process the data entered into this form.
• A page that provides links to other websites of interest and sources of further information.
