Abstracts: An elevator is a type of vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people or goods between floors of a building, vessel or other structures .The elevator turns electrical power into rotational or mechanical power. The Elevator must fit within the given space requirements of the building. It cannot made too large. So, it affects the building structure itself. The development of elevators was led by the need for movement of raw materials including coal and lumber from hillsides. Main parts of any elevator system are gear box, rope and electric motor which helps to move people or goods between floors. In gear box, worm and worm wheel drive is used to transmit power. Generally during running hours elevators don’t tends to run on a constant load so there is considerable amount of out of balance load or varying load acting on the gearbox so these factors causes the worm wheel to detoriate faster than expected. Now to nullify the effect of the varying load we have made changes to the design of counter weight of elevator. Moreover from detail analysis of gearbox design and the forces acting on the different parts we found that permissible torque carrying capacity of worm wheels is also less which is due to less stress taking capacity of worm wheel material. So our goal is to improve the stress taking capacity of worm wheel material. The improved material proposed had better torque transmitting capacity.
