ABSTRACT
In general, copper cables are used for electrical wiring but it has some disadvantages like multilevel faults, break, short, earth(noise). Thus, the detection of fault is very complicate. To overcome the disadvantages of copper cables, it is planned to use fiber optics which has many advantages like long distance communication, high bandwidth, data security, etc. Earlier Optical Fiber Cable(OFC) were used to connect the long distance places, called optical transport network(OTN) and now it is used even in local/access network called optical access network(OAN). Fault may occur manually or naturally like rain, natural disasters. In this project, the faults are measured using optical time domain Reflectometer(OTDR). Parameters like splicing loss, cable break and loss of cable are measured. All customers requires Quality Of Service(QOS) on bandwidth and they are also interested to make Service Level Agreement (SLA) for their service which are expected from service provider. So, Internal service provider (ISP) should design their network to support the customer’s requirement suitably. The OTDR technique is also used to satisfy the customer needs by finding out the faults in optical networks in a very efficient manner.
