This Labcar is basically a virtual engine which is used to check the compatibility of the ECU with the engine. With virtual engine we can virtualize the conditions of any engine and can check whether the given ECU is compatible or not
Modern engines are equipped with an engine management system (EMS)/Engine Control Unit (ECU) which can be modified to different settings, producing different performance levels. Optimized engine calibration is critical to design powertrains that combine dynamic performance and environmental responsibility. There are too many variable combinations to test individually, and tradeoffs among performance, efficiency, emissions, and reliability are complex. Engine calibration involves tuning these variables and others to maximize performance across the operational range of engine speeds and loads. Because the effects of calibration variables are interdependent, it is impossible to calibrate an engine by simply optimizing one variable at a time. However, because there may be a dozen or more variables, each with a range of possible values, it is not feasible to test all possible combinations on a working engine. Further changes in product during product development cycle and weather uncertainties during in vehicle test and calibration require a powerful and flexible alternative system for the above stated purpose. we did all this with the help of NiRa ECU. NIRA i7r is a powerful engine control unit designed to control modern diesel engines with efficient common rail technology. NIRA i7r comes complete with an application tool, NIRA rk for loading of software program, tuning of engine data, monitoring etc. Together they constitute a system that offers the operator full access and control of the engine functions. Featuring support for advanced fuel injection strategies with multiple injections per stroke, NIRA i7r enables the engine tuner to reach maximum performance while maintaining desirable characteristics such as quick engine response time and precise control of torque output. NIRA i7r is also designed to handle sensors and actuators related to Euro V and Tier 4 regulation, including EGR and particulate filters. NIRA i7 is an engine management system designed by Nira Control AB. NIRA i7 is available in three flavors: NIRA i7x for DI/PFI Otto engines, NIRA i7rs for common rail/unit injection diesel engines and NIRA i7rp for common rail diesel engines with piezo injectors. Following are the results that we observed on the completion of the project:- 1. ECU is compatible 2. LABCAR is active and is supported by the NIRA ECU 3. Various vehicle and environment conditions can be simulated 4. Amount of fuel, injection timing, air flow, boost pressure, can be successfully controlled by Labcar on NiRA rk ( caliberation software ) 5. Labcar can be used for rapid testing of ECU 6. We can easily perform repeatedly test with maximum accuracy on Labcar 7. We find that Labcar is very useful for Bench caliberation of ECU Achievement in: Process constraints: Automated tests are the ultimate weapon to do efficient and repetitive tests - for instance regression test - to improve product quality. Integration of automation in ECU test is mandatory for any OEM or Tier-1 to certify a ECU release. Achievement in: Time constraints: The overall project setup and ECU closed loop integration takes only a couple of days. This is due to the fact, that small engine ECU is less complex than a normal automobile ECU. For example ECU parameters for contributing to engine control are around 10 times lesser than for automotive projects. For small engine ECU typically less than 1000 labels. Achievement in: Budget constraints: Without a big capital spend, with the LABCAR is now possible to have a portable compact “desktop” HIL that can do open and closed loop testing for small pin count powertrain, chassis and body control ECUs such as for small engine vehicles. The system is flexible as it is not limited to powertrain and scalable – more the one ECU can be integrated and run at the same time. Hence, capital investment protection is ensured
