Four principles of ethics intertwine with documentation issues, including:
Autonomy:
Autonomy is the respect we have for others as human beings, which allows them the right to make judgment and chose the actions. The principle of autonomy underlies legal issues of informed consent, advance directives, refusal of treatment, privacy, and confidentiality in access to records.
Beneficence:
Beneficence is the duty to do good to others, to help them, and to further their interests, while refraining from harming others.
Justice: refers to justified distribution of benefits and risks burdens in a community and can underlie principles of access, distribution, and appropriateness of care.
Fidelity:
Fidelity is the faithfulness, which includes truthfulness, trust, and keeping promises. This principle is the basis of respect in the nurse- patient relationship.
