MASS SPECTROMETRY.pptx (Size: 601.92 KB / Downloads: 51)
INTRODUCTION:-
Mass spectrometry is the most accurate method for determining the molecular mass of the compound and its elemental composition.
This method was introduced by J. J. Thomson in 1912. later on Aston (1919) and Bainbridge (1920) developed this for organic compound structural determination.
What does a mass spectrometer do?
1. It measures mass better than any other technique.
2. It can give information about chemical structures.
Basic functions of mass spectrometer:-
To vaporize compounds of varying volatility.
To produce ions from neutral compounds in gas phase.
To separate ions according to their mass to charge ratio.
To detect the ions and producing a corresponding signal.
Applications of Mass Spectrometry
Pharmaceutical analysis
Bioavailability studies
Drug metabolism studies, pharmacokinetics
Characterization of potential drugs
Drug degradation product analysis
Screening of drug candidates
Identifying drug targets
Biomolecule characterization
Proteins and peptides
Oligonucleotides
Environmental analysis
Pesticides on foods
Soil and groundwater contamination
Forensic analysis/clinical
