Mechanism of chip formation
cutting tool exerts a compressive force on work piece.
Causes the material to deform plastically and shear off
Sheared material begins to flow along the cutting tool.
Applied compressive force is called cutting force.
continuous chip
cutting of ductile materials form continuous ribbon type chip
Pressure of tool makes the material ahead of cutting edge
Generally suffers compression and shear
contunuous chip with built up edge
temp is high at interface btwn the chip and tool
Some portion of chip may stick on the rake surface of tool
Close contact helps to dicharge heat and bcom stronger
discontinuous chip
with further advance of the cutting tool the crack travels and a small lump of material starts moving up
Crack propagates towards the surface and thus a small fragment of the chip gets detached
