The best submissions may be invited to act as a research assistant, for pay, with Dr. Kissoon. This
micro-study conforms directly with Dr. Kissoon’s current research on homelessness. Neither the structure
or findings are to be used without Dr. Kissoon’s permission.
Micro-research question to be completed as a mini-project culminating in 30% of your course grade:
How does homelessness differ in urban and rural areas, and why might understanding those differences
allow communities, and the nation, to address homelessness better?
To answer this question, your research design framework includes:
1. Questionnaire consisting of 15 closed-response questions (max) and 5 open-response questions (max)
administered to 30 people (min).
drafted for piloting in Friday’s tutorial – WEEK 8
- questions for your consideration to assist with the photo elicitation and subjective mapping:
a) “If I had to take 5 photos in an urban area to typify homelessness – please list 5 specific places or
locations and what I might find there?” e.g. The CSDP car-park at 1 Council Ave provides shelter for
homeless people AND
b) “If I had to take 5 photos in a less urban or more rural area to typify homelessness –please list 5
specific places or locations and what I might find there?” e.g. Barrackpore Anglican cemetery - some
homeless men can be found there in dry season sleeping.
PLUS
a) In the space provided can you sketch or describe what resources a homeless person might access in
POS or SDO to survive? Next to this sketch or description, please also identify what resources a
homeless person from a more rural area might access? – This question may be modified by conversation
with Krystal Ghisyawan, guest lecturer.
revise over the weekend and begin distribution, to be completed by WEEK 10
2. Key informant interviews (2) from different stakeholder perspectives.
conduct these in WEEK 9 and bring to Friday’s tutorial to CODE your interviews for analysis
In the case of homelessness, these interviews will be conducted with Leevun Solomon and Dr.
Kissoon.
3. One (1) hour of observation and description with detailed reflection (Optional).
Your personal analysis from quiet observation is required to situate the research and reveal
biases that may arise in your analysis and conclusions

4. Photo-documentation, photo-voice, or photo elicitation OR subjective/mental mapping (Optional)
at least 10 photos (5 from urban and 5 from less urban places) for analysis OR

ASSUMPTIONS
1. There is a distinction between urban and rural in Trinidad. To avoid spatial dichotomies, you will use
a continuum in your questionnaire:
