Mitochondrial proteins are proteins that reside within the mitochondria of cells, even within the ridges of the internal mitochondrial membrane. Mitochondrial proteins are generally involved in mitochondrial function, including the realization of electron transport chain reactions. Mitochondrial proteins are derived from genes encoded by the nuclear genome, or by the DNA contained within the mitochondria.
