Modeling and Simulation
ABSTRACT
Modeling and simulation (M&S) technologies have been used for decades to evaluate numerous designs and operational
concepts for various systems in the realm of aerodynamics, flight vehicles, and flight operations. In addition to traditional flight
simulation engineering, training, and testing, several new technical fields and applications have increased their use of M&S
and have gained attention for the capabilities they have produced. These new areas, which include UAVs, joint mission
operation/training, and air traffic systems, are continuing to drive technology development using M&S. Along with growth in
these areas, however, there has been a continuing trend toward reducing the amount of funding devoted to integration of, and
investments in, simulations. This trend has increased over the years and has had profound impacts that put high-fidelity
simulations at risk.
