Converting Diesel Engine into Dual Fuel Engine
Abstract
The air pollution problem is faced by several means to reduce its dangerous effects . One method is to use NG in Internal Combustion Engines and gas turbines. It is to convert Benzin Engines to work on NG, since the HUCR of NG is about 15. However to convert already existing diesel engines to NG fuel needs modification. The idea of using pilot injection of diesel oil in a diesel engine absorbing air + NG is studied in this project. The conversion of diesel engine , of the pre-combustion type, installed in the diesel lab of the faculty of Engineering , Arab Academy for Science , Technology and Maritime Transport to run on NG was studied before experimentation.
The high auto-ignition temperature of natural gas is a serious advantage since the compression ratio of conventional Diesel engines can be maintained. The current work focuses on an experimental investigation conducted on a one cylinder direct injection (DI) Diesel engine, which has been properly modified to operate under dual fuel is the gaseous one, which is by a pilot Diesel liquid injection. Comparative results are given for various engine speeds and loads for conventional Diesel and dual operation without (EGR), revealing the effect of dual fuel combustion on engine performance and exhaust emissions. The results show that the diesel engine can work with dual fuel with natural gas using a gasoline conversion kit which is much cheaper than changing the cylinder head. Furthermore, it was shown that the opacity is significantly reduced by using dual fuel compared with its value in diesel fuel.
