ABSTRACT
Dam safety is the major concern to the government and the people. There are many
safety measures taken to ensure the safety of the dams. But still there is no effective systems
that can monitor the status of the dams from a centralized location. This proposed project aims
to develop device that monitor the vibrations in the dam, the water level and rain details.
These values are updated to the main server PC at regular intervals. The administrator can
monitor the situation from any centralized location in a web page. This helps to understand
the maximum level of water that can be stored, the safety level of water, the impact level
that the dam supports etc. So any emergency situations like unexpected rain occurs vibrations
occurs, the decision can be taken immediately after verifying the live data. This project has
microcontroller based embedded system connected to a MEMS accelerometer sensor, rain
detection sensor and a mobile with GPRS ( general packet radio service) connectivity.
The device has a microcontroller connected to a MEMS based Vibrationion sensor,
Water Level Sensor and a GPRS enabled mobile. The various operations of the device are
controlled by the software that is embedded in the microcontroller. The vibration sensor
monitors the vibrations that occur in the dam. So if there is any breakage in the concrete or
any natural calamities like earthquake occur, the vibrations will be more. These vibrations are
calibrated and compared with the threshold value. Also, the level of water and the amount
of rain are monitored. These values are transmitted via GPRS. These updated values can be
monitored on any PC with GPRS connectivity. When any of these value is above the threshold
level, the system automatically sends notification messages to the control station. The safe
level for the values can be fixed by the user. Web pages displays the informations which is
updated with live data by the system.
General Packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data service available
to users of Globel System for Mobile Communiocations (GSM) and IS–136 mobile phones. It
provides data rates from 56 upto 114 Kbits/sec. GPRS is a technology which is changing the
present shape of mobile communication.A GPRS connection is established by reference to its
Access Point Name (APN). The APN defines the services such as Wireless Application Protocol
(WAP) access , Short Message Service (SMS),Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and for
Internal communication services such as e-mail and World Wide Web acces.
GPRS data transfer is typically charged per megabyte of traffic transferred, while
data communication via traditional circuit switching is billed per minute of connection time,
indepent of whether switching is billed per minute of connection time, independ of whether
the user actually is using the capability or is in an idle state.
The system has two main modules-embedded side and the computer side. The
computer side application software can be developed using HTML and any scripting language.
The web page developed with this software helps the user to monitor and control the
parameters in real time in the PC.
