Nowadays people are less attentive or does not have proper exposure on the trends in automotive fields other than the person who are in that field. At the present times the automotive engineering areas have improved dramatically new features are included in this fields every day for sophistication of the people. As per present situation Ohio State Univerity’s Center for Automotive Research (OSU CAR) helds the leading hand in the research based upon the automobiles. The OSU CAR narrows its mission on the advanced electric propulsion and energy storage systems, engines and alternative fuels, intelligent transportation and vehicular communication systems, autonomous vehicles, vehicle chassis systems, and vehicle safety.
As per the interview of Giorgio Rizzoni OSU CAR is focusing and putting their complete effort in improving the efficiency and fuel economy of the automobile engines in future.
But on taking on the account of present trends of the automotive engineering . The following are found in the top end types of cars in automotive field.
Cruise control system
Over take indicator
Night visualizer
Vehicle stability assist
Cruise control system:
Cruise control (sometimes known as speed control or autocruise, or tempomat in some countries) is a system that automatically controls the speed of a motor vehicle. The system is a servomechanism that takes over the throttle of the car to maintain a steady speed as set by the driver.
The driver must bring the vehicle up to speed manually and use a button to set the cruise control to the current speed.
The cruise control takes its speed signal from a rotating driveshaft, speedometer cable, wheel speed sensor from the engine's RPM, or from internal speed pulses produced electronically by the vehicle. Most systems do not allow the use of the cruise control below a certain speed - typically around 25 mph (40 km/h). The vehicle will maintain the desired speed by pulling the throttle cable with a solenoid, a vacuum driven servomechanism, or by using the electronic systems built into the vehicle (fully electronic) if it uses a 'drive-by-wire' system. All cruise control systems must be capable of being turned off both explicitly and automatically when the driver depresses the brake, and often also the clutch. Cruise control often includes a memory feature to resume the set speed after braking, and a coast feature to reduce the set speed without braking. When the cruise control is engaged, the throttle can still be used to accelerate the car, but once the pedal is released the car will then slow down until it reaches the previously set speed.
On the latest vehicles fitted with electronic throttle control, cruise control can be easily integrated into the vehicle's engine management system. Modern "adaptive" systems (see below) include the ability to automatically reduce speed when the distance to a car in front, or the speed limit, decreases. This is an advantage for those driving in unfamiliar areas.
The cruise control systems of some vehicles incorporate a "speed limiter" function, which will not allow the vehicle to accelerate beyond a pre-set maximum; this can usually be overridden by fully depressing the accelerator pedal. (Most systems will prevent the vehicle accelerating beyond the chosen speed, but will not apply the brakes in the event of overspeeding downhill.)
On vehicles with a manual transmission, cruise control is less flexible because the act of depressing the clutch pedal and shifting gears usually disengages the cruise control. The "resume" feature has to be used each time after selecting the new gear and releasing the clutch. Therefore, cruise control is of most benefit at motorway/highway speeds when top gear is used virtually all the time.
Over take indicator:
Over take indicator though its of great importance it does not contain any specific complicated operations . the overtake indicators are provided at the side of the side mirrors provided for the dirver’s view of the back approaching vehicle the overtake indicator consist of four indicator or led which glows to specify the back approaching vehicles the indicator glowing vehicle is about to pass the vehicle in before of it. By using this indicator the accidents can be avoided.
Night visualizer:
Night visualize is the top most important feature which is recently added in the automobiles of the automotive field . the night visualize is very much needed for the people riding the vehicle during the night times it avoids the accidents or murdering people the night visulaizer is based upon the principle of heat visulaizing. The heat sensors with the temperature seeking cameras are provided at the hood of the vehicle which keeps on sensing any change in the temperature the before it. The cameras provide a heat visualising image which represents the presence of animal or human being which could avoid the over riding of the vehicles over the animal or the human being who where about to cross the road.
Vehicle stability assist:
The Vehicle Stability Assist system helps to stabilize the vehicle during cornering if the car turns more or less than desired. It also assists you in maintaining traction while accelerating on loose or slippery road surfaces. It does this by regulating the engine's output, and by selectively applying braking. When VSA activates, you may notice that the engine does not respond to the accelerator in the same way it does at other times. You will also see the VSA Activation Indicator blink. For a technical description of the Vehicle Stability Assist System, see page 300. The VSA system cannot enhance the car's driving stability in all situations and does not control your vehicle's entire braking system. It is still your responsibility to drive and corner at reasonable speeds and to leave a sufficient margin of safety. If the VSA indicator comes on while driving, pull to the side of the road when it is safe and turn off the engine. Reset the system by restarting the engine, and watch the VSA system indicator. If the indicator remains on, or comes back on while driving, have the VSA system inspected by your Acura dealer. If the indicator does not come on when the ignition switch is turned ON (II), there may be a problem with the VSA system. Have your dealer inspect your car as soon as possible. Without VSA, your car will have normal braking and cornering ability, but it will not have VSA traction and stability enhancement. VSA Off Switch This switch is under the left vent. Press it to turn the Vehicle Stability Assist system on and off. When VSA is off, the VSA Activation Indicator light comes on as a reminder. Pressing the switch again turns the system back on.
on taking the account of future trends in automotive engineering:
though the research universities has greater vision on the improving aspects of the automotive engineering the aspects sounds impossible but the efforts are being taken to achieve the impossible on the field of the automobile which the world have never seen
some of the aspects that the researchers have enlisted are:
fuel efficient running
hydrogen as the fuel source
to reduce the air drag by the transformation of the vehicle body
advanced tumble flow technologies
variable valve timing with intelligence
to reduce the weight of the body of the cars to improve the efficiency
ULTRA(Urban Light TRAnsport)
Even though the present trends or features are seen only in the higher end cars or costly cars . In mere future it is possible for the appearance of these features in the lower end vehicles too with improved and more new trends to be followed.
