Abstract
This paper mainly explores the concept of surface technology which gives digital content a new dimension where it is not restricted to just mobile phones or television sets rather has the ability to interact with the user physically. It is a technology in its infancy, where even the engineers behind it cannot predict its full impact; but the possibilities are everywhere, underhand and underfoot and on every surface imaginable. This technology affords the users to discard with the mouse and keyboard and they could be replaced by more natural hand gestures on a large display screen where multiple users can interact simultaneously which will make computing and technology easier to use .In this paper we discuss the design of a surface computer. We also demonstrate how this technology can be applied to different aspects and how it helps to put people in control of their experiences with technology, making everyday tasks entertaining, enjoyable and efficient.
Introduction to surface computing
Surface computing can be used as a general name for the branch of computing where users employ a touch screen-like environment to interact with the computer without a keyboard and with no mouse. Surface computing is something that could become a universal platform for computers embedded in walls, desks, tables, refrigerators or other surfaces. Surface Computing brings to life a whole new way
to interact with information that engages the senses, improves collaboration and empowers consumers.
Technology behind surface computing
Screen
A diffuser turns the Surface computer’s acrylic tabletop into a large horizontal multi touch screen, capable of processing multiple inputs from multiple users. The Surface can also recognize objects by their shapes or by reading coded "domino" tags. It can also turn an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, dynamic surface that provides effortless interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects.
Infrared
Surface computer’s "machine vision" operates in the near-infrared spectrum, using. An 850-nanometerwavelength LED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touch the tabletop, the light reflects back and is picked up by multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960.
Advantages of surface computing
Imagine and figure out just how attractive such a machine must be to the retail and service industries. Microsoft has partnered up with cellular provider T-Mobile, as well as hotel conglomerate Starwood Hotels and Resorts and Vegas casino giant Harrah's Entertainment. Machines have been deployment at the end of 2007.
When we walk into a T-Mobile store, pick up a phone you're considering buying and place it on the Surface computer. The table could then either link with the phone via Bluetooth or scan a code imprinted on the packaging to identify it. Suddenly, the phone is surrounded by graphical information (pricing, features, etc.). After selecting a service plan and any accessories, you just run your credit card through a reader built into the table (or, when RFID cards have become the norm, just slap your card on the tabletop) and your new phone is paid for. By the time you open the package; everything is set up — all without talking to a single employee.
Conclusion
For engineers, this is the ultimate play toy, allowing for experimentation with a wide array of applications that combine the physical and virtual worlds that most of the technology in the table is off-the-shelf electronics that can be cost reduced over time. It is expected that the shapes and sizes of surface computers could be expanded, including versions that could hang vertically book on a wall. At its current price, Surface computers probably are not practical for consumers to use in their homes, and Microsoft isn’t going to sell the units to consumers at this point. But the ideas and technologies used in Surface computer eventually should appear in products aimed at home users. What Surface computer will look like in the future isn’t known at this point. You could see Surface computer type technologies built into your countertop at home or into the door of your refrigerator. In three to five years, the form factor will change, and the price point will drop. Surface computing is redefining how people interact with digital information. It is taking an ordinary tabletop and turning it into a vibrant surface. It is taking computing to places it hasn’t been able to go.
