WHAT IS OPEN-DELTA CONNECTION ?
If one of the transformer of a 3Ø transformer bank (Δ-Δ) is removed and 3Ø primary supply is connected to primaries as previous then this method of transforming 3Ø power by only two transformers is called Open-Delta or V-V connection.
Reason for the Connection
When one of the transformer in a (Δ-Δ) bank is disabled, it still supplies 57.7% of its actual capacity.
When it is anticipated that in future the load will increase then the power will supply by closing the Open-Delta.
Benefits :
1. Main benefit is if 1 of transformer became disabled then also it can continue supply power at 57.7% of its rated capacity.
2. If there phase voltage is to small and anticipated that future load will increase in that case Open-Delta transformer can be installed to reduce primary installation cost.
Conclusion :
For this followings advantages Open-Delta connection is using very widely, which decreased the primary installation cost of transformer.
