ABSTRACT
Occupant Detection and Temperature Control for Ceiling Fan Operation is a project
which is generally intended to automatically facilitate the surrounding air by providing
cool breeze condition.
There are numbers of various reasons leading to the invention of this project; the left ON
fan consumes power unnecessarily by the time there is nobody within the room etc,
manually operating the fan sometimes provides uncomfortably condition to the occupant
and also it can lead to total failure of the fan due to frequently using the speed knob
(ON/OFF switch).
The project has the objectives of providing a means of detecting the human presence so
as to turn ON the fan and OFF as there is no body. Also providing a means of controlling
the temperature variations by increasing or decreasing the speed as the fan is ON.
The initiative has been done so as to improve the efficiency of the ceiling fan, providing
comfortability to the consumer as well as optimizing the electric power consumed by the
ceiling fan.
Upon preparing this initiative; the literature reviews concerned with the existing system
had been done, relevant data on the system components were collected and well
analyzed, designing parameters has been calculated and finally, the system has been
implemented and tested OK.
To finish this up, it is the conclusion of this project that all the set objectives have been
achieved and therefore the “OCCUPANT DETECTION AND TEMPERATURE
CONTROL FOR CEILING FAN OPERATION” project has been done successfully and
it is working properly.
INTRODUCTION
Background Information
A ceiling fan is a device suspended from the ceiling of a certain building or hall etc
which employs hub-mounted rotating paddles to circulate air. Ceiling fans are both
functional and decorative. They are particularly useful in the summer, since they
effectively reduce energy usage while creating a cool breeze “wind chill factor”. They
can also be used in the winter to gently pull heated air away from the ceiling where it
tends to collect.
Overhead ceiling fans have become very popular over in recent years. In order for the
ceiling fan to be used effectively and efficiently so as to get rid of consuming
unnecessary power by the time there is nobody and also to have its speed controlled
automatically due to temperature variations an idea for this project has to be well
implemented.
Problem Statement
The existing system tends to fail to work properly as usual when the manual regulator
wear out its contacts because of frequent usage that causes arcing and ionization of air
between the contacts and then causes its contact to melt.
However, problems have developed as to the operations of the fans. For example,
traditional fans are often left on when occupants leave rooms with overhead ceiling fans.
Thus, the fans can consume unnecessary power in unoccupied rooms. Another problem
occurs when newly arriving occupants to new rooms and/or to darkened rooms have to
search for hard to find wall toggle switches and/or overhanging chains to turn on the
ceiling fans. Warm and/or stuffy rooms can be very uncomfortable to newly arriving
occupants, who would have to wait for the rooms to cool down and circulate airflow.
Further, turning on and off several fans in a home or building is often so inconvenient
that fans are left on.
Project Objectives
Based on my project, the objectives are divided into two; the main and the specific
objectives.
Main Objective
• The main objective of this project is to come up with a ceiling fan control
system that will automatically facilitate air.
Specific Objectives
• Specifically to design an automatic control system detecting the room
occupants so as to turn the fan on and off.
• To design a system that will sense every minute change of temperature in a
surrounding in order to vary the speed (revolutions per minute (rpm)) of
the ceiling fan.
Significances of the Project
At the end of this project people must find it been useful due to the following points;
• By using the automatic switching mechanism it will improve the efficiency
of the ceiling fan.
• To eliminate the inconvenience of regulating the speed of fan manually
when it has the temperature variation outside the room.
• To optimize the electric power consumed by the ceiling fan.
