Abstracts: “Marketplace” is not a technical term of art, so unfortunately, there exists no precise and well established de?nition clearly distinguishing what is and is not an online marketplace. We consider a market to be an interaction mechanism where the participants establish deals (trades) to exchange goods and services for monetary payments (i.e., quantities of standard currency). Some would say that the web itself is a marketplace (or many marketplaces), as it provides a medium for buyers and sellers to ?nd each other and transact in a variety of ways and circumstances. Scoping the place in the marketplace as a narrower conception, limiting attention to sites and services attempting to provide a well-scoped environment for a particular class of (potential) exchanges would be appropriate.
