An optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) is a device used in wavelength-division multiplexing systems for multiplexing and routing different channels of light into or out of a single mode fiber (SMF).
Fixed OADM
A fixed OADM is used to add or drop data signal on a dedicated WDM channels.
A fixed OADM is not flexible and may require a change of hardware component if different set of wavelengths needs to be dropped or added.
It has two configurations:
Reconfigurable OADM
It can be reconfigured dynamically from a remote network management site.
No need to change hardware components if different set of wavelengths needs to be dropped or added.
Desired features of ROADM
Wavelength dependence
ROADM degree
Remote reconfiguration
