Introduction:
Optical time domain reflectometer is used to measure various types of losses in fiber and also used in fault localization. It works on the principle of back scattering of light (Rayleigh scattering).
Problem Identification and Problem formulation:
Optical fibers are used to meet most of the communication needs of today. However, maintaining and repairing OFC is a difficult task as spliced joints have to be checked for losses . Also the fiber itself being subjected to various external forces , undergoes bending and this amounts to fiber loss. All these losses are to be checked and measurement is crucial for proper maintenance of OFC equipment.
Objective of study:
The purpose of OTDR is to measure various losses in the fiber and also to measure the fiber length. In view of the problems in maintenance , OTDR is a very important in making these measurements. Continuity of fiber can also be checked using OTDR.
