Introduction
Organisational study focus on operations and overall aspects of an organisation. It gives a vivid and clear picture about the various departments. Organizational studies are attempts to observe the work of managers and employees in organizations and learn the secrets of managerial effectiveness. It also broadens the understanding of organizational processes and fruitfully blends management concepts with work life practices. The key business process and the operation of a department as whole.
This study is intended to grab the entire functional as well as managerial aspect of MARINE CONTAINER SERVICE (SOUTH) PVT.LTD. This study also deals with the operations in the field of shipping and allied services. It is providing a clear picture about the conventional system of loading into a general cargo ship in un-unitised packages and the advantages of containerisation.
Need of the Study
This study is conducted in the shipping field to analyse the role and future trend of the freight forwarding business. To understand the essential and major sub function of logistics, and how transportation creating time and place utility in goods. Analysing the backbone of supply chain management. How It creates link between producer and buyer. And also ensuring the delivery of the goods to the right place, at the right time after the highest possible quality journey and at the right price. How the companies in the group have been set up by three master mariners to render competent and high quality services in the field of shipping and allied services. It may help the trainee to match his class room reading with actual practices in business.
Objectives of the Study
1. To get to know about the functioning of the MCS PVT.LTD
2. To know the functioning of a shipping agency.
a. To understand the objectives of each department, its functions and find out how it is linked to the corporate objective.
b. To study all processes procedures and programs of the department.
c. To develop an understanding on the coordination and control mechanisms in the organization.
Scope of the Report
The study helped the trainee to get an exposure about the freight forwarding industry .It was an opportunity for the trainee to understand the organizational functioning ,policies and processes of various functional departments in marine container services pvt.ltd .
Period of Study
The project organisation study of MARINE CONTAINER SERVICE (SOUTH) PVT.LTD was carried out during the period of 2nd may 2011 to 17th may 2011 at island Cochin.
Methodology
The study is meant for familiarising the organization, its structure, functions, process and practices .Hence observation and interview research are used in this study .
1. Data about the functioning of departments like documentation, operation, marketing, and finance are collected through observation and discussion with the staff and the dept. Managers.
2. Secondary data regarding freight forwarders, volume of export in one year, services facilities are collected by referring previous annual records, company profiles, and official website

1. The first chapter deals with introduction, need of the study, objectives ,scope of the study ,methodology, and scheme of report .
2. The second chapter deals with the Indian logistics scenario and an analysis of the current situations
3. The third chapter deals with the profile of the company and a nut shell about ship agent along with the modus operandi of marine container services ltd.
4. Chapter four deals with suggestions and recommendations.

Introduction
Containerisation is a system in which cargo of any nature can be unitized or grouped in to a unit ,is loaded into a box of specific dimensions and then transported by sea ,rail or air .as compared to the conventional system of loading in to a general cargo ship in un unitised packages . Containerisation brings down the expenditure on packing.
a. It reduces the number of points in the handling of the cargo in transit,
b. It eliminates damages to the cargo in bad weather at sea.
c. Prevent pilferage of the cargo
d. It facilitates quick transportation over the land
e. It can offer door to door movement of the cargo.
f. It saves the time and labour.
World Scenario
The idea of containerisation was first introduced by Malcolm Mclean, owner of a huge trucking company in USA. Containerisation the term very familiar to present day. Shipping industry was a completely unknown concept a few decades back. Over the years ,the industry has created a separate identity within the shipping world through continuous development .To facilitates trade there are many modes of transportation and shipping is the commonly used method of transportation to facilitates product handling and protect the product during movement and storage many firms have turned to use the container over the years and .the industry has created a separate identity within the shipping world trough continuous development and many international lines have come up for serving customers all over the world .
