EVOLUTION OF MS-DOS
MS DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System.
In June 1980, Gates and Allen hire Gates’ former Harvard classmate Steve Ballmer to help run the company.
The next month, IBM approaches Microsoft about a project code-named "Chess.“
In response, Microsoft focuses on a new operating system.
They name their new operating system "MS‑DOS."
MS‑DOS is effective, but also proves difficult to understand for many people.
LATER STAGES:
The product line has changed from a GUI product to a modern operating system over two families of design, each with its own codebase and default file system.
The 3.x and 4.x family includes Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me.
Windows NT family started with NT 3.1 in 1993.
Modern Windows operating system versions are based on the newer Windows NT kernel that was originally intended for OS/2.
WINDOWS
Microsoft Windows is a series of operating systems produced by Microsoft.
Microsoft introduced an operating environment named Windows on November 20,1985.
On the basis of growing interest of GUI(GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE)
The most recent client version of Windows is Windows 7.
ENVIRONMENT SUBSYSTEM:
Designed to run applications written for many different types of operating systems.
None of the environment subsystems can directly access hardware.
Must request access to memory resources through the Virtual Memory Manager that runs in kernel mode.
Three main environment subsystems: the Win32 subsystem, an OS/2 subsystem and a POSIX subsystem.
INTEGRAL SUBSYSTEM:
Looks after operating system specific functions on behalf of the environment subsystem
Consists of a security subsystem, a workstation service and a server service.
The security subsystem deals with security tokens, grants or denies access to user accounts based on resource permissions, handles login requests
The workstation service is an API(application programming interface) to the network redirector, which provides the computer access to the network.
The server service is an API that allows the computer to provide network services.
