HISTORY OF PRESS MACHINES
Joseph Braham (13 April 1748[1] – 9 December 1814 ), born Stainborough Lane Farm, Wentworth, Yorkshire, England, was an inventor and locksmith. He is best known for having invented the “PRESS MACHINE”. Along with William George Armstrong, he can be considered one of the two fathers of hydraulic engineering.
WHAT IS PRESS MACHINE ?
A machine press, commonly shortened to press, is a machine tool that changes the shape of a workpiece is known as a “PRESS MACHINE”.
1: Bed:-
The bed is the lower part of the press frame that serves as a table to which
a Bolster plate is mounted.
2: Bolster Plate:-
This is a thick plate secured to the press bed , which is used for locating
and supporting the die assembly. It is usually 5 to 12.5 cm thick.
3: Die Set:
It is unit assembly which incorporates a lower and upper shoe, two or more
guide parts and guide part bushings.
4: Die Block:
It is a block or a plate which contains a die cavity.
MECHANICAL PRESS MACHINE
Any machine that exerts pressure to form the required shape or cut materials is called as “MECHANICAL PRESS”.
Hydraulics work on the principle of pressurized fluid forcing mechanical action. A hydraulic system installed on a machine is called a hydraulic circuit. Hydraulic circuits are composed of a pump to compress the fluid, lines to carry the fluid, a cylinder where the fluid is pumped and a piston moved by the pressurized fluid in the cylinder. Hydraulics can also actuate shafts to power hydraulic motors and conveyors.
WORKING
Since the hydraulic press works on the basis of Pascal's Law, its working is similar to the one of the hydraulic system. A hydraulic press consists of basic components used in a hydraulic system that includes the cylinder, pistons, the hydraulic pipes, etc.The working of this press is very simple. The system comprises of two cylinders, the fluid (usually oil) is poured in the cylinder having a small diameter. This cylinder is known as the slave cylinder.
The piston in this cylinder is pushed so that it compresses the fluid in it that flows through a pipe into the larger cylinder. The larger cylinder is known as the master cylinder. The pressure is exerted on the larger cylinder and the piston in the master cylinder pushes the fluid back to the original cylinder.
