Introduction
Blood the fluid of life is RED regardless of the race or belief or colour. The ready availability of Blood of all kinds during emergency can save lives. Our experience shows that there are enough number of volunteers who are willing to donate blood during camps or on call. This project aims at linking the volunteers to blood banks through camps on call basis or both.
At present two blood banks at Govt. Hospital, Theni and Govt. Head Quarters Hospital, Periyakulam are functioning in Theni District. Efforts are under way to open two more blood banks / Blood storage centres at the Govt. Hospital Bodinaicknur and Cumbum.
Specific Objectives
1. To ensure the ready availability of the required group of blood, 24 hours in a day. 365 days in a year.
2. To Organize Community based blood donation cams at Villages and among the Unorganized sector of People to propagate the Messages about Blood donation and to remove the myths and misconceptions about blood donation.
3. To create and update a directory of Voluntary Donors so that the required blood is available on request.
4. Capacity building of Primary Health Centre System, NGO system and other community based Organizations to organize Blood Donation camps at the request of the Blood Bank Medical Officers.
5. To generate awareness on Blood Donation and its significance in saving lives during emergencies particularly during Obstetric emergencies and accidents.
Strategy
1. Organizing community based Blood Donation camps at villages and among unorganized sectors.
2. Organizing Blood Donation camps among organized sectors like Colleges, industries and others when the need is more.

Partners in the Scheme
1. Joint Director of Health Services and team.
2. Deputy Director of Health Services and team.

4. Deputy Director (Medical & Family Welfare) and team.
5. Concerned PHC Medical Officers and team
6. Indian Red Cross Society of Theni district
7. Local Community Based Organizations, individual volunteers and Philanthropists
8. N.S.S / Youth Red Cross Units of colleges
Activities
1. Selection of camp Village and site
2. Fixing of a date, 15 to 20 days in advance
3. Logistics arrangements and Blood Donors Mobilization by Deputy Director of Health Services and Primary Health Centre team.
4. Technical guidance and support and Collection Blood units by Blood bank Medical Officers and team.
5. Co-ordination and sponsoring of contingency expenditure to the tune of Rs. 500/- per camp by the IRCS.
6. Blood collection by Blood Bank team.
7. Certificates issued to the Donors by the blood Bank medical Officer at the Camp site itself.
8. Local community people observes and learn about Blood Donation and its significance in saving lives.
9. Collected blood is subjected for the mandatory tests and made available to patients admitted in Govt. Hospitals and on payment of the prescribed fee to private Hospitals also in case of GENUINE EMERGENCIES.
