1.Introduction
Today's mobile devices display highly-detailed, visually-intensive content such as video, television, games, web pages and maps, all of which need higher brightness screens than offered by legacy mobile phone displays. A typical cell phone display has about 200 cd/m2 of brightness and is often turned off when used for voice communication. Acceptable luminance for multimedia displays is a minimum of 400 cd/m2 –and the display is constantly illuminated. Twice as bright and “always on” shortens runtime. PenTile RGBW technology enables mobile display panels to reach the brightness levels necessary for today’s multimedia applications without increasing the already limited power budget.
PenTile RGBW™ technology gets more with less
Fewer subpixels enable the columns to be one-third wider, increasing aperture ratio and transmissivity. The clear (white) subpixels can double the white light transmission in a small-format VGA, WVGA, or WSVGA handheld displays. Improved transmission means Pentiletechnology can boost brightness or reduce power, or enable a combination of both. Furthermore, the layout increases contrast to attain blacker blacks.
Cuts power consumption in half for equivalent brightness
With today's power-hungry 3G devices, the ability to manage mobile device power is more critical than ever. Multimedia capabilities demand higher screen brightness and resolution. Higher resolutions have lower aperture ratios, demanding more LEDs in the backlight. Video decompression and always-on screens consume additional critical battery capacity.
These demands mandate an ever increasing level of power to maintain sufficient brightness. PenTile RGBW™ technology gives display designers more flexibility to determine the most appropriate combination of brightness and power for a particular device–an enormous advantage over legacy RGB stripe. PenTile algorithms can be set to statically or dynamically manage power consumption with dynamic backlight control, resulting in aggressive power savings.

Achieves higher resolution
Next–generation content and applications need higher resolution displays for optimal performance, which is difficult to achieve under the constraints of legacy RGB stripe design rules without increasing power consumption and expense.
Because PenTile RGBW displays are more efficiently designed, the resolution of a PenTile RGBW panel is perceived as about one-third higher than an RGB stripe panel with the same number of subpixels (points of light). Therefore, multimedia content such as detailed maps, menus, and web pages can be rendered at higher resolution using PenTile RGBW technology, compared to an RGB stripe panel of equivalent subpixel density (and similar cost).
Increases cost savings potential and yield for manufacturers
High-performance panels may cost less to build with PenTile RGBW technology because it eliminates 33% of the column drivers and backplane transistors, so it uses less silicon and enables improved glass manufacturing yield. Requiring only minor modifications to fabrication facilities, it is minimally disruptive to existing processes. PenTile RGBW technology can significantly improve the performance and intrinsic benefits of both amorphous silicon and low temperature polysilicon fabs, increasing performance without adding cost.

Legacy displays cannot readily meet the taxing conditions of today’s data-centric content, which is visually-intensive, always on, and increasingly power-hungry. Integrating PenTile RGBW technology into mobile displays is one way to cost-effectively meet these conditions in order to accelerate the adoption of new devices, content and applications enabled by the convergence of high-speed 4G networks.
Provides Flexible Settings for Color Control and Power Savings
Unlike RGB stripe, PenTile RGBW displays have flexible configuration settings that tune color saturation, brightness, image sharpness, and power consumption. Adjustment settings can be defaults, user-defined, or dynamically changed, so users always experience the most appropriate balance of color reproduction and power savings for their content, device, or remaining battery life.
PenTile Dynamic BackLight Control (DBLC) enables displays to sense video content and effectively boost dynamic range. This optimizes video at dramatic power savings compared to RGB stripe, or alternatively, can provide bright, highly saturated computer-generated content when appropriate, but at slightly less power efficiency. This means mobile video will look more realistic and will run longer, while web content and applications can still meet user expectations for color saturation and brightness. .
