Introduction and overview:
Photoacoustic tomography imaging is a new and promising technology in the area
of early cancer and tumor detection. Proposed project is split into two sub projects, which
are:
Data acquisition system (DAQ) and
Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Design
While data acquisition deals with much of the software need of the project, our
project which is PCB Design is primarily focused on the hardware.
A finished project will be able to receive a signal from transducer array process it
through a couple stages of amplifiers and multiplexer built on the printed circuit board
and send it to the DAQ system.
The photoacoustic imaging system will consist of a laser source to illuminate
tissue samples. Area that contain large amount of blood such as tumors will have a higher
amount of absorption of the laser signal. This absorption will cause the temperature of the
tissue/tumor to increase slightly. The heated area will expand in size, resulting in the
creation of sound waves which will be detected by the transducer array. The electrical
signals produced by the transducer array will then be processed by the receiver board and
sent to the data acquisition system.
