ABSTRACT
Power line communications(PLC) uses the existing infrastructure resources, i.e., power lines for communication purposes. While the majority of recent contributions have discussed PLC for high data-rate applications like internet access or multimedia communication serving a relatively small number of users. PLC works by transmitting high frequency data signals through the same power cable network used for carrying electricity power to household users.

DEFINITION OF PLC
"Power Line Communications " basically means any technology that enables data transfer at narrow or broad band speeds through power lines by using advanced modulation technology
Power line communication system operate by impressing a modulated carrier signal on the wiring system
Different types of power line communications use different frequency bands, depending on the signal transmission characteristics of the power wiring used.
WHY POWER LINES FOR INTERNET?
Offers right balance of cost, convenience and speed.
Lower costs are achieved because the service is implemented on standard electrical lines and is already connected to almost all residence and business through electrical lines.
It speed would be 1Mbps, 20 times faster then a standard modem connection.
CONCLUSION
The usage of power line communications over the low-voltage electric power supply networks gives an alternative for the telecommunication access area.
Initially power lines were used for controlling the appliances, however with the recent technology advancements the power lines are now able to compete successfully with other relatively stable home networking technologies like wireless and phone lines.
