Material handling
Objectives of Material handling
Increase effective capacity of warehouse
Minimize aisle space
Reduce number of times product is handled
Develop effective working conditions
Reduce manual movements
Improve logistics service
Reduce cost of operation
Principles of Material handling
1. Planning principle: Plan all materials handling and storage activities to obtain overall operating efficiency.
2. Systems principle: Integrate as many handling activities as practical into a coordinated operating system covering all departments ie., receiving, vendor, storage, production, inspection, packaging, warehousing, shipping, transportation and customer.
3. Materials flow principle: Provide an operating sequence and equipment layout that optimize materials flow.
Automated Materials Handling Systems
Automated storage and retrieval systems, carousels case picking and item picking equipment, conveyors, robots and scanning systems have become common in warehouses.
These have helped many firms to achieve improvements in materials handling efficiency and productivity.
Also provides reduced labour cost and floor space, while increasing inventory accuracy.
Automated systems provide several benefits for warehouse operations and can be categorized into operating cost savings, improved service levels, and increased control through more and better information.
Types of Materials Handling Equipment – A Design Perspective
Flexible path
Fork lifts, power lifts/skids
Very flexible, but usually labor intensive
Continuous-flow fixed path
Conveyors, track-guided vehicles
Expensive but capable; limited flexibility; need high volumes to be efficient
Intermittent-flow fixed path
Rail-mounted cranes
