Case Study
Project conceived in 2009 & commissioned in March, 2011
Project Location, Village Punjas, Tehsil Merta, Dist. Nagaur, Rajasthan
Nearest railway station, Merta road, 3 km from site
Primary fuels, mustard residue & 15% coal / lignite as supportive fuels
Fuel linkage through established networking agents, with adequate size at storage yard
Mustard husk, a difficult fuel with high alkali & chlorine contents, fuel slaging, corrosion & fouling of ash the main problems encountered
Boiler furnace design, very critical
(low combustion temperature of 700 deg C, higher furnace heating surface area at 1404 sq. m., superior materials for super heater coils & boiler tubes, higher super heater height at 36 m, 18 nos. of MSB & 4 nos. LRB, as well as 2 field type ESP designed to overcome the fuel problems)
50 TPH boiler with 67 kg/cm2 pressure & 480 deg C temperature with peak generation of 110 % of MCR for half hour per shift, excess air not exceeding 35% at MCR, de-aerator outlet temperature 115 – 125 deg C, feed water temperature to economizer at 165 deg C & flue gas temperature at outlet of air pre-heater at 150 deg C
Boiler efficiency of 80% on mustard husk, 82% on imported coal & turn down ratio of 1:4
WIL make boiler
Conclusions
The perceived problems of difficult fuels like mustard husk are possible to mitigate through adequate care in plant design, equipment manufacture, testing, erection & commissioning, as well as operation
Merta plant is now in operation at full load successfully , although initial operating issues were faced
