INTRODUCTION
A new engine concept was developed by engineering team of VGT Technologies that was Round Engine.
Here in round engine instead of forces of combustion pushing down on the piston , they push around the crankshaft.
Toroidal engine is one in which power piston rotate in a perfectly circular chamber with the drive shaft at its geometric centre
In VGT the piston and timing disc cutout ,enables effective management of compression and expansion strokes
THEORY
CONSTRUCTION OF ROUND ENGINE
Engine consist of following parts
Cylinder: Toroidal shape , round toroidal housing.
Main Disc:connects piston to drive shaft ,replaces connecting rod, crankshaft
Piston: connect main disc , drive shaft andmove – timing disc
Valves: single or multiple inlet or exhaust valves ,obtain displacement on demand
Timing disc: replace cylinder top . provide a means for
a.Compressing fresh air
b.Backstop against the piston
Combustionchamber:external, length varied for different compression ratios
Combustion chamber:An external combustion chamber whose length can varied to obtain different comprsssion ratios
WORKING
Engines actually operates by using diagrams and parts numbering
Compression :
A charger injects air into toroid piston housing (1) in front of the piston (2) through the air inlet valve(3)
The piston (2) moves in the counter clockwise direction over the inlet value(3) and begins compression the fresh air against the timing disc (4)
As the compression occurs the combustion
chamber inlet valve(5) opens and fresh air is
compressed in to combustion chamber(6) which
is the external to the toroid piston housing.
when the piston (2) covers the inlet valve(7), the
compression stroke is completed.
Combustion:
After the compression is complete and the piston is
moved over the inlet valve to the combustion
chamber(1)
The valve(2) closes and the compressed air is trapped
in the combustion chamber
Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber and
combustion occurs
While combustion is occuring the piston(3) moves
forward pushing the fresh air that didn’t get
compressed in the combustion chamber
Residual volume of air and the piston pass through the opening in the timing disc.
One’s the piston has advanced pass timing disc for,
The timing disc closes behind the piston sealing the torrodial piston housing assembly
Expansion:
The combusted air pushes the piston forward untill the piston travels past the exhaust valve(1)
As the location of bthis valve can vary, the length of the expansion stroke can be longer,or shorter, than the intake stroke
Exhaust Stroke:
The exhaust gases escape through the exhaust port one’s the advancing piston moves past the exhaust port.
Remaining exhaust gases in toroid are pushed by incoming turbocharged air
ADVANTAGE
Advantages of round engine are
Smooth operations
Superior torque at low rpm
High relability
Less fuel consumption
Low parts count
Adjustable power stoke
Longetevity
Displacement on demand
Multiple fuels including Hydrogen,ethanol ,methanol,
diesel
APPLICATION
Round Engine Technology has many applications for future global development.
Agriculture - tractors, self-propelled combines and swathers
Aviation – planes, helicopters
Industrial – locomotives, earth movers, graders, forklifts
Marine – tug boats, ships, barges
Recreational – snowmobiles, ATVs, motorcycles, go-carts
Small Engine / portables – chain saws, leaf blowers, lawnmowers
Stationary - welders, generators, compressors
CONCLUSION
Round Engine has lot of potential as compared to reciprocating engines
Design of engine offers significant efficency
This engines are constant, effective torque arm, less
