What does VoIP mean?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that enables one to make and receive phone calls through the Internet instead of using the traditional analog PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) lines.
VoIP is packetisation and transport of classic public switched telephone system audio over an IP network.
It allows 2-way voice transmission over broadband connection.
It is also called IP telephony, internet telephony, voice over broadband, broadband telephony.
Limitations of Circuit Switching
Connection has to be continuously maintained during the
entire phone conversation
Usually talk time is half of the connection time
Much of the transmitted data is wasted
A 10-minute phone call translates to 9.4 Mbytes of data transfer
Long distance or international calling is costly because of toll
charges.
Advantages of VoIP
Cost reduction
Integration of voice and data network
- reduces PSTN toll charges
- makes voice “just another IP application”
- still provides the quality and reliability of PSTN
Open standards implementation support
Advanced features
- advanced routing
- voice mail
- contact centers
- unified messaging
Efficient network utilization
- silence elimination
- redundancy reduction
- efficient data throughput
Improved enterprise operational flexibility
Reduced total cost of ownership
Applications of VoIP
