ABSTRACT
Natural dyes are the dyes that have their source in plants, animals, minerals or any other natural material. They are eco-friendly in nature and do not cause any harmful effects as in case of synthetic dyes. However in natural dyes there exist weak interaction between fabrics and natural dyes which results in durability problems. Cross-linkers are the substances that are normally used to increase the durability of finishes when they are applied to the fabric. The recent research work on non-formaldehyde cross-linkers has increase the chance of producing eco-friendly fabrics. The present research work is an endeavor to apply natural dyes in combination with eco-friendly cross-linkers to enhance the durability and performance of natural dyes.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Verissimo et al.(2001) did a research on extraction of dye from annatto seed (Bixa orellana L) to find out the dye type .Ethylene alcohol has been used as extracting agent. By using potassium hydro oxide with the extracted dye solution identifies the amount of bixin content.
Petal et al. (2002) assessed that natural dyes are eco-friendly in nature and dye obtained from tulsi leaves are used to dye different textiles materials. Metallic salts may or may not be used in dyeing. With sufficient wash fastness the variation in shades ranges from light to dark green and cream to brown for different textiles.
Han and Yang (2005)conducted a research on natural dyes and found that these are safe to use and does not cause any harmful effect and are less toxic then the artificial dyes. Various researches shows that dye from safflower and elderberry contain carmine which causes asthma problem on inhalation because most of these clours are organic in nature has mutagenic effects. Natural dyes also have a medicinal value. For example turmeric contain cur cumin in it which is sterile or have uncontaminated properties.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
The research study entitled “studies on the durabilityimprovement of natural dyes extracted from henna leaves and acacia bark by eco-friendly cross-linkers” will be initiated in Department of Fibre and Textile Technology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and will be carried out in the department and a reputed processing unit. The research work involves the process of extraction of natural dyes from henna leaves and acacia bark at different time and application of natural dye at different time and temperature. Application of natural dyes will be applied on fabric.
