ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE:
The main purpose of this project is to provide mouse, keyboard and power on/off operations for the disabled people (armless) .Disabled people (armless) are unemployed in software and computer related fields. This project is a computer control system for such disabled users. Using this computer control system they can perform computer operations like data entry, web browsing, accessing software applications, online banking and entertainment (watching videos and listening to music).
INTRODUCTION:
The main concept of this computer control system is to provide mouse and keyboard operations. This computer control system has two modes, they are mouse mode and keyboard mode. This system uses accelerometer to detect the user’s head tilt in order to direct mouse movement on the monitor. The clicking of the mousebutton is activated by the blink of a user’s eye through the photo sensor. Switching from mouse mode to keyboard mode is activated when an eye is closed for some specified period of time. The keyboard operation is implemented through on-screen keyboard or virtual keyboard and to select the characters, numbers and symbols in the keyboard, we use accelerometer and photo sensor. The power on/off operation is implemented through photo sensor.
HARDWARE DETAILS:
The computer control system has two main parts; they are transmitter part and receiver part. The transmitter part has 2-axis accelerometer, photo sensor, and analog to digital converter, 8051 microcontroller and RF transmitter. The receiver part has RF receiver, 8051 microcontroller, and PS/2 cable. We are using accelerometer to detect the relative tilt of the head (front-back and side to side). The free scale accelerometer chip has a two axis, RC filtered output. That output could be fed directly into the first two pins of port A. The clicking of the mouse is activated by the user’s eye blink through photo sensor. Output of the accelerometer and photo sensor is fed to the analog to digital converter. Then output of the ADC is given to the 8051 microcontroller. The output of the TX USART pin in the 8051 microcontroller is sent to the RF transmitter. A wireless RF transmitter is used to transmit the data to the base unit. A wireless RF receiver is used to receive the data from transmitter part. The output of the receiver is fed to the RX USART pin of the 8051 microcontroller. PS/2 cable is used as interface between computer and microcontroller. Through this cable, signals for the mouse and keyboard operations are sent. Aspecial care is taken to stabilize the voltage supply to this chip through capacitors and an RF choke. The circuit was powered by a 9v battery.
Eye Blink sensor
.This Eye Blink sensor is capacitance based. The Variation Across the eye will vary as per eye blink. If the eye is closed means the output is high otherwise output is low. This to know the eye is closing or opening position. This project involves measure and controls the eye blink using IR sensor. The IR transmitter is used to transmit the infrared rays in our eye. The IR receiver is used to receive the reflected infrared rays of eye. One important point is both IR transmitter and receiver should be placed straight line to each other. The transmitted signal is given to IR transmitter whenever the signal is high, the IR transmitter LED is conducting it passes the IR rays to the receiver. The IR receiver is connected with comparator.
APPLICATION:
This computer control system is more useful for disabled people (armless). Since the device relies on user’s head and eye movements, it can be used even by patients who are paralyzed from shoulder downward. The device makes it convenient to browse websites, listen to music, watch videos and accomplish other common operations on the computer. This system can also be used for performing operations like data entry, e-commerce, browsing software applications, and learning and to play simple games.
