Abstract
In this paper we propose a dynamic biometric voting system using fingerprint scanning technique. The system that is followed currently, for data collection procedure and counting of the votes is a manual process. Such a procedure is erroneous and inefficient due to errors from various sources like counting errors, clerical errors, forging etc. The functional requirements embedded in the design of the proposed system ensure well-secured identification and authentication processes for the voter through the use of simple biometrics. In this model fingerprint of the voter is compared with the reference fingerprint in the database. Once the fingerprint of the voter is authenticated, he/she is allowed to vote. After the voting procedure is over the votes are transmitted to the server station wirelessly.
Introduction
The term BIOMETRICS is derived from two Greek words bios–life and matron-measurement[1] therefore the term biometric means measurement of life. Biometrics is the term given to the use of biological traits or behavioral characteristics to identify an individual. Biometric is classified as: - Physiological and Behavioral.
Physiological biometrics measures a specific part of the structure or shape of a portion of a subject’s body this includes fingerprints, iris scan, retina scan etc. Behavioral biometrics is more concerned with how you do something, rather than just a static measurement of a specific body part. Some of the behavioral biometrics in use includes these: Handwriting, keystroke, voice recognition etc[1]
Conducting free, fair and transparent elections in one of the largest democracies like India has become a painful and arduous task. So to overcome this problem we take the help of two different technologies wiz biometrics and embedded system. [6]
Fingerprint Recognition
Fingerprint recognition system can be used to analyse two fingerprint images one is original image and other is template image stored in the database. Fingerprint recognition is divided in two sub-parts: one is verification system and other is identification system. [3] Fingerprint verification is used to verify the authenticity of one person with one to one matching of the database, while fingerprint is used to specify the person identification with one to one matching, fingerprint verification is rapid execution method than fingerprint identification. Fingerprint is especially serviceable for criminal investigation cases. [9]
Thinning
After binarization, next leading pre-processing technique used for matching process is thinning. Image thinning is the process of decreasing the thickness of all ridges lines into single pixel width. Thinning process do not convert the original x,y location and angle of direction of the correct minutiae points of the image, which assure the correct calculation of minutiae points and it is also known as Block Filtering. In this ridges thinning are used to destruct the extra pixel of ridges till the ridges are just one pixel broad [3].This is done using MATLAB‟s inbuilt
Conclusions
In this paper, we have proposed an online e-voting system which can tackle all earlier issues encountered in a conventional (manual) voting system. New system maintains voting statistics in real-time while preserving the integrity of the voting process from the minute a voter steps in to cast his/her vote until the cast vote is registered in favor of the chosen candidate
