Introduction
For decades, companies have run software on their own internal infrastructures or computer networks. In recent years, traditional software license purchases have begun to seem antiquated, as many vendors and customers have migrated to software as a service business model. Software as a service, or 'SaaS', is a software application delivery model by which an enterprise vendor develops a web-based software application, and then hosts and operates that application over the Internet for use by its customers. Customers do not need to buy software licenses or additional infrastructure equipment, and typically only pay monthly fees (also referred to as annuity payments) for using the software.
How does SaaS Function?
Software as a Service can apply to any number of applications – but the one thing all SaaS Solutions have in common is that the data is stored in a centralized location, on a centralized server.
In the case of most Applications, it will function through a Web Browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. It could also be a desktop application that speaks directly with a Web server over the Internet and synchronizes with it, such as Mobile Exchange Devices syncing to a hosted Exchange Server.
Who or what is not suited for SaaS?
SaaS solutions for Microsoft applications such as SharePoint, Exchange, PerformancePoint Server, Office Communications Server, SQL Server and more. However, there are situations where certain application uses are not well suited for a SaaS environment. For instance, collaborating large multimedia formats, such as Gigabyte sized media files, may be slow or inefficient to network over an Internet connection.
Benefits of Software as a Service include:
1. Less IT Burden - Your IT staff will never be burdened with performing complex upgrade and maintenance procedures. This can shave hours off extended schedules by eliminating time on the job tackling problems without dedicated support. Your IT staff can work regular hours resulting in less stress, increased productivity and more time to share with their families. Implementation of SAAS through Multi-Tenancy
SaaS applications provide customers with centralized, network-based access to data with less overhead than is possible when using a locally-installed application. But in order to take advantage of the benefits of SaaS, an organization must surrender a level of control over its own data, trusting the SaaS vendor to keep it safe.
To earn this trust, one of the highest priorities for a prospective SaaS architect is creating a SaaS data architecture that is both robust and secure enough to satisfy tenants or clients who are concerned about surrendering control of vital business data to a third party, while also being efficient and cost-effective to administer and maintain.
