Several years ago, Metso Minerals - Pyro Systems recognized the need for a scrap tire
pryolysis system that would produce a high grade carbon black product. Pyro Systems
background as an innovative designer of indirect fired rotary kilns and grinding mills has
been a key factor in completing this project. A pilot plant was installed at the Pyro
Systems Test Center in the USA, with a scrap tire feeding capacity of over 100 kg/hr.
The Metso Tire Pyrolysis System is a continuous system, feeding minus 50 mm tire
shreds into an indirectly fired rotary kiln. The tires decompose, with a carbon char going
to final processing, and the gas to an oil condensing system. The non-condensable gases
(NCG's) can be used as fuel for power generation or other direct fired uses. Metso
Minerals - Pyro Systems has received patents on the process design and key mechanical
features of the Tire Pyrolysis System. A patent is pending on the oil condensing system
developed for the recovery of oil. Carbon Black produced from the pilot plant has been
successfully used in the production of tires and industrial rubber products.
