INTRODUCTION
Engine generates the power required for moving the vehicle or any other specific purpose.
Engine converts the energy contained in the fuel to useful mechanical energy by burning the fuel inside a combustion chamber. An engine contains number of parts like valves and other valve train components, piston , camshaft, connecting rod, cylinder block, cylinder head etc.
CLASSIFICATION OF ENGINES:
Based on working principle :
Internal Combustion Engines(IC)
2 stroke engines
4 stroke engines
External Combustion Engines(EC)
Steam engines
Turbine engines
Based on Fuel used, IC engines can be classified as :
Diesel Engines(CI)
Petrol Engines(SI)
Gas Engines.
REASON FOR SELECTION :
Higher internal rejections
Delay in delivery due to high rejections
If customer demand is not met, we lose market share
From Perato analysis defects contributing major role is “ stem damage ”.
It has to be reduced for the better performance of engine valves & performance of engines. The further reduction can be made by experimentation.
CONCLUSION
An engine valve manufacturing deartment when beginning of the project overall internal rejections was 7 percent, we are unable to deliver to the customer due to high internal rejections occuring in machine shop hence we observed which are defects effecting more in internal rejections, based on fish bone analysis, identified three defects contributing more & those defects taken as project. After project , it reduced from 7 percent to 1.85 percent by using QC story methodology and six-sigma calculations. Reduction of major defects resulted in the reduction of manufacturing the valve.
