STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF MATERIALS CHARACTERISTICS ON LATHE MACHINE

INTRODUCTION
The project is to study and analyse the characteristics of the selected materials with the help of Lathe Machine .The study is to be conducted on the basis of three parameters viz Cutting speed, Feed rate and Depth of cut.
Cutting speed is defined as the speed at which the work progress with respect to the tool. Feed rate is defined as the distance the tool travels during one revolution of the part. Depth of cut is the thickness of material removed by one pass of the cutting tool over the work piece.
The primary factor in choosing cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut is the material to be cut. However, we should also consider material of the tool, rigidity of the work piece, size and condition of the lathe
The three materials with different hardness are chosen in this project and will be analysed with the help of a lathe machine. They are EN8, EN24 and High carbon high chromium.
EN8 material is used for the manufacturing of general purpose axles and shafts, gears, bolts and studs as it is hard and easily machinable. EN24 is a popular grade of through-hardening alloy steel due to its machinability. High carbon high chromium is used for manufacturing of dies, punches, cutters, measuring tools reamers etc. because it has good wear resistance and good machinability.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
a) It will help us to enhance the knowledge about materials.
b) It helps to know the behavior of materials under different temperature conditions.
c) It helps to know stresses produced in the material during machining process.
d) This study enables to understand which material should be preferred for particular purpose.
e) This study will show different characteristics of materials, which enables to use them alternatively keeping in view the economic factor.
SCOPE OF STUDY
In order to achieve the objectives of this project, the scopes are as below:
a) Literature review, all information about the Lathe Machine, the three chosen materials, turning process, surface roughness are gathered from the Internet.
b) Usage of Lathe machine.
c) Calculation to find out the cutting speed, depth of cut and the feed rate.
d) Calculation for surface roughness.
METHODOLOGY
a) Firstly we will take three materials that we are going to study and that are :-
i. EN8
ii. EN24
iii. High carbon high chromium
b) Now we will take first material and put it on lathe.
c) Then we will perform different operations on the material.
d) We will take readings of cutting speed, depth of cut and feed rate for the material.
e) Repeat this procedure for other two materials and note down the readings.
f) Now plot the graphs on the basis of readings.
g) Then compare the properties of these three materials.
ADVANTAGES
This study has following advantages:
a) This study helps to gain knowledge about the material.
b) This study helps to choose better material for particular operation.
c) It helps to know which material is suitable and economic.
d) It helps us to study all the properties of materials.
CONCLUSION
Summing up it can be said that this study will help to know behavior of three materials, EN8, EN24, High carbon high chromium under different temperature and stress conditions. This study will also be able to show appropriate cutting speed, depth of cut and feed rate for three materials under the stated conditions and scope of study.
