Brief on Power Transmission & Distribution
Network of conductors between the generating stations and the consumers- Transmission and Distribution System
Transmission System-
delivers bulk power from power stations to the load centers.
Distribution System-
delivers power from stations/sub-stations to the consumers
In Electrical Power System, Distribution System forms the very major part.
Why Automation necessary
Due to absence of monitoring at the base station (33kv sub-station)-Overloading occurs, results in low voltage at customer’s end, increases risk of frequent breakdown of transformer and feeders.
In the event of fault on any feeder section downstream ,the Circuit Breaker does trips and it leads to blackout over a large section of the distribution network.
Use of Operational switch at faulty fedder segment can substantially reduce the blackout area.
Technologies Used:
Different technologies/techniques that fall within Distribution Automation are available or are being automated to reconfigure circuits & limit the extent of outages.
Remote Terminal unit(RTU)
Micro-processor based IED.
Dedicated pair of copper conductor is used with RTU to sense every contacts and transducer value.
In DA system, various quantities(voltage, current, tempt.,switch status, Oil level)-recorded in field at distribution transformers and feeders-using data acquisition device-RTU.
RTU is installed at the remote location and acts as a termination point of network.i.e.for any switching operation of circuit breaker, that can be operated by operator from the base station.
