Abstracts: This report is an outcome of the work carried out in doing and completing final year project, Study of various defects encountered and its prevention in Steel castings. Foundry industry suffers from poor quality and productivity due to the large number of process parameters. Buyers demand defect-free castings. Casting defects result in increased unit cost. The defects need to be diagnosed correctly for appropriate remedial measures; otherwise new defects may be introduced. Unfortunately, this is not an easy task, since casting process involves complex interactions among various parameters and operations related to metal composition, methods design, molding, melting, pouring, shake-out, fettling and machining. The defects may lead to improper functioning of the product and even rejection of the product. The result of the casting process carried out in the industry for some products is not satisfactory. The objective of this project is to study about the casting process, detection of the defects in castings and to analyze these defects to find out the causes responsible for the occurrence of these defects and to suggest the remedies to avoid the defects.
